What is Viral Sign?

Viral Sign is advanced screening science that combines infrared imaging and screening science enabled by artificial intelligence to prevent infection risk. By means of thermal signature of the face, Viral Sign enables early, presymptomatic identification of suspected cases of influenza-like illness.

Viral Sign is safe. A Viral Sign screening does not require contact and does not expose individuals to radiation. Viral Sign is totally safe for all age groups, including children and the elderly.

Why is Viral Sign Necessary?

A thermal signature of the face provides a comprehensive predictor of the presence of virus.

On the other hand, body temperature or skin surface temperature is not a reliable predictor of abnormality, or the presence of virus.

Skin surface temperature can be influenced by various internal and external factors, including:

  • Circadian rhythm
  • Calorie consumption
  • Physical activity
  • Emotional state
  • Humidity
  • Atmospheric temperature.

Small changes in the vascular response to the above can produce significant changes in surface temperature.

What is Viral Sign designed to do?

Viral Sign is designed to facilitate routine screening of large groups, including employees, customers, and guests of factories, health systems, trade shows, events, and government facilities. The advanced screening algorithm that produces a comprehensive thermal signature of the face enables early, presymptomatic detection of the presence of virus, thereby equipping organizations to limit the spread of virus.

Is Viral Sign easy to use?

Yes. Viral Sign is a fully automated medical alert system. The Viral Sign system enables quick (two-second), automated screening of populations. Viral Sign does require calibration after the system is turned off. The calibration process enables the system to recognize and account for the ambient environment. The process of calibration is also automated. The Viral Sign team conducts training sessions (typically 2 hours of dedicated time) to ensure a successful launch of Viral Sign at the organization. And, the Viral Sign team is always available for support.

Feverfy Screening in Action

Does Viral Sign provide a definitive diagnosis of COVID-19?

No. Viral Sign is never intended to diagnose. Viral Sign is a fast, simple, mass screening method utilized to ensure safe environments. Viral Sign can be utilized to triage individuals to a medical professional and laboratory testing for a definitive diagnosis. Viral Sign identifies individuals with the suspicion of influenza-like illness, including COVID-19. It does not a definitive diagnosis of COVID-19.

Is there a usage protocol?

Viral Sign can be used in any environment according to international epidemiological protocols. Viral Sign is based on the COVID-19 Coronavirus Infrared Imaging Smart-Screening Protocol and follows international ISO standards.

How does Viral Sign differ from other screening methods, such as industrial thermography?

Viral Sign is not a measurement of facial temperature meter based on a single maximum temperature point. Both forehead thermometers and non-contact thermography have limitations due to variations in distance of the device to the individual and ambient humidity. In addition, individuals can express variations in their “normal temperature relative to population norms. Ultimately, symptomatic measurement of body temperature is inconsistent as a result of the measurement being acquired from a single dot / pixel on the face that will be altered only in the phase of higher temperature, or fever.

Viral Sign is differentiated by its ability to assess the presence of virus without the limitations of body temperature measurement.

  • The infrared image captured by Viral Sign reflects the microcirculatory dynamics of the skin surface of individuals in real-time, comprising the vascular, nervous, and musculoskeletal systems, and inflammatory processes.
  • Facial thermal gradient areas identify the distribution of vasomotor activity of the facial skin surface.
  • The thermal gradients enable the quantitative and qualitative identification of normal and abnormal patterns. Abnormal patterns in the thermal gradient predict the presence of influenza-like-illness prior to the onset of symptoms and concurrent with symptom expression.

What happens if an individual being screened is taking medication to reduce my fever?

With medication, the maximum body temperature can be normal. Therefore, screening should not be based solely on maximum or average temperature.

Viral Sign is an intelligent warning system that assesses the thermal distribution in specific areas of the face, which changes when the infection is active, even when the individual is taking medications. The inflammation / vasodilation picture can be mapped, qualified, quantified and thus trigger the alert system.

Are there other things that can increase face temperature?

Yes, medications such as amphetamines, alcohol withdrawal, and non-infectious diseases such as multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis can increase facial temperature. This should be acknowledged and documented if the person is stopped and taken for further clinical examination after going through a Viral Sign screen.
